Like My Father
This song is the third one I wrote about my Dad. The other two did not make it passed my notebook. I can look back now, decades later, and know just how much our parents matter in the person we end up evolve to be. In my case, I catch myself behaving, talking and thinking like more father more and more…. and it’s been 18 years since he passed.
-
Like my father, how much of him is me
Like my father, how much like him will I be
Cannot escape, break away, run or hide
Parts of him that are deep inside
Like my father, same walk, same talk, same grin
Patterns, habits feel like a prison
We shared so much, soul, swing and rhythms
What about our often-shared wisdom
CHORUS
Clouds disappear a sturdy man appears
Standing strong in the face of fear
Here’s a shoulder, like my father
Like my father, live with honor
Like my father, pick out what must be seen
Sensing what is real or just a dream
Pushing too hard, since I was 15
Toward his path I continue to lean
CHORUS
Bridge
I wish he was here, to care and compare
I wish he was here, to share and to dare
I wish he was here, I wish he was here
Did not know him until late in our lives
Once connected, tight were our ties
Then he was gone, so quickly, I realize
Like my father, with tears in my eyes.CHORUS
