Chase Those Dreams Down
This song started as “Cody’s Couch.” The Stillhouse Junkies had entered the band contest at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival and were staying in the house we had rented for the long weekend. All the bedrooms were taken by the annual family festivarians so what was left was floor space and one couch. At some point the first night, someone said “Cody gets the couch!” The comment stuck with me and I wrote it down in my songwriting journal on the “possible stories” page. Two years later, this song finally started to show up with the original version including a lyric about Cody getting the couch.
After an initial version about the band’s early years, the pandemic showed up and grounded the band. Another year passed by, the band was back on the road and this new version is now in place. Cody has a partner now and the reference to the couch was replaced by the story of pandemic realities and what it takes to chase a dream down. The narrator is Dad and his observation of the band’s journey.

Every night another town
Every hall its own sound
Every stop a new story
Every gig looking for glory
Woke up to pandemic days
Overnight empty highways
Chorus
Ass on the line
Wheels on the ground
Doin’ what you gotta do
To chase those dreams down
Suddenly sheltered in place
Netflix turtle puzzle empty space
Record dead in its tracks
Lost track of the facts
Only comfort to be seen
Even Springstein home watching a TV screen
Chorus
Bridge 1
Passion promising
Momentum dreams
All of your routines
To chase what dreams bring
House concerts lawns driveways
Streaming shows both night and day
Facemasks finally go away
CDC says its okay
Back on the road again
Testing in the van for antigensChorus
Bridge 2
Red Bull, Bourbon, Belgium Dark,
Doin’ what you do
To chase your dreams down
