How Beautiful You Are

I heard the first two lines of the chorus during a conversation about how bad someone was feeling. In the same breath, we mentioned just how beautiful this person was. The combination of feeling just horrible and being a beautiful person at the same time stayed with me. The story developed from there with the verses coming from people around me really feeling lousy at a particular time. I made notes of how each one was feeling as they shared their struggles.

The chorus expanded from the two original lines over time into the balance between what our heart feels and our heads say in their sometimes-endless loop

Thanks to the Stillhouse Junkies for backing me up on this recording. Alissa Wolf, Fred Kosac and Cody Tinnin. Recorded and mastered by Scooter Smith in Durango, Colorado.

  • Is true, your life stolen away from you
    Anger, rage, waves of wrath
    Just want your life back
    Hopelessly sad

    CHORUS
    Remember how beautiful you are
No matter how bad you feel
Beauty is, it’s in your heart
    Feelings are in your head
You can have both, go Ahead

In the valley of despair, where nobody cares
    Waiting for the light
    Trying with all your might
Just to make it through the night

    CHORUS

    Break

    BRIDGE
With a sparkle in your eye, kindness on your brow
Soul shining through, stillness surrounding you
    Tan hermoso como el mar
    How beautiful you are

So much to think, so much to say
So much to sift through to find your way
    It’s okay… to feel okay

    CHORUS
