We Are Here For Each Other

In the days after Hurricane Harvey, I heard a story on the radio about a person who lost everything, and I mean everything. During the interview, the question came up: “how did you get through all of this?” The answer, through the tears of this man, was “I learned that we are here for each other.” I was so touched by this experience that the lyrics of this song, in the voice of this tearful man, poured out of me over the next hour or so.

It was a year later that the tune showed up to fit the words. With a minimal amount of editing, the song came alive.

The song helps me always remember, especially in our darkest hours, “We are not alone, we are together, We are here for each other.”

Thanks for Fred Kosak for adding guitar to this 2023 version.

  • Lost my mother, I miss her
    Lost my wife to cancer
The winds of Harvey left all I owned a blur
All I had left was looking for answers

    CHORUS
    Sister, brother, next door neighbor
Best friend, enemy, total stranger We are here we are here for each

Lost if all, now it’s only me
Don’t know what to do, what to believe
Hanging by a thread, no sense to me,
    I’m down on my knees

    CHORUS

    Bridge
What I learned to make sense of the pain
    To remain sane
We are not alone, we are together
We are here for each other

So much has happened to me
Got to find a reason to believe
What point, a purpose, a path to relief
All I can do is wait and see

    CHORUS 2X
