Geoff was inspired by a quote he heard many years ago that stuck with him: “No one is born to hate another person. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite.” Long Walk to Freedom. Nelson Mandela’s relentless pursuit of justice and equality is more important than ever before. His commitment to peace, negotiation and reconciliation serves as a model for all of us to focus on.
When Geoff was in the studio with Engineer Jeff Jones to record his initial version in 2022, he told him about the quote that inspired this song. Jeff paused, then said that he had once visited Robben Island and what a deeply moving experience it was. He then remembered he had brought a rock back from the visit. Geoff sang the solo version of this song with that rock in his palm.
Geoff feels we need this message now as much as ever.
